Renegade Duo is Jon Mendle, guitar and Melinda Martinez Becker, mezzo soprano. Jon and Melinda first collaborated while students at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and founded Renegade Duo in 2017 with the intention of paying tribute to music they find interesting and exciting. Utilizing both historical and modern instruments, they perform uncommon and rarely heard repertoire for guitar and voice. Their concert programs span several genres and centuries, from Renaissance lute songs to forgotten 19th century repertoire, to reimagined jazz standards and music by contemporary classical composers. Nimbly navigating different eras and genres, they take care to investigate and highlight stylistic differences in each using the full range and capability of their instruments, including 19th century guitar, lute, tenor banjo, and modern classical guitar. Based in San Francisco, they recently performed their inaugural season for several concert series in the Bay Area and beyond, including the International Art Museum of America Music Salon in San Francisco, First Sunday Concert Series at the National Hotel in Jackson, and the Vernon Salon Series in Oakland. Upcoming performances include a program for the Classical Guitar Concert Series at the Davis Arts Center in May.
